Bahay Kubo

We Filipinos know about what is Nipa hut, the one that we call Bahay kubo. Bahay kubo is very popular in the Filipinos culture especially to the lowland cultures in the Philippines. It is a type of stilt house where it is raised on piles over the surface of the soil to primarily as protection against the wild animals and flood.

 Bahay Kubo is divided into three layers the silong (area beneath) the underground of the house which prevent from flood and prevent pests such as rats from getting up to the living area , bubungan (roof) space above the living area through warm air could rise that gives cooling effect during the summer season and kisame (ceiling). The living area is made of bamboo slat floor which designate cool air to flow into the living area. Walls also made of light materials which also allow cool air during hot season and keep warm during cold wet season. Also bahay kubo made of large windows and give some fresh and cool air during hot days. All of the things that built from bahay kubo is typically made of wood or bamboo and other light materials, which also the roof is made of nipa, anahaw or other locally plentiful plant. Thats how the bahay kubo being outline.
